Shoreline Stabilization, Cultural Resource Protection
Promethean General Contractors was selected in October 2020 to perform emergency shoreline stabilization work along 660 feet of the Black Warrior River, adjacent to the Moundville Archaeological Park—one of the most culturally significant Native American heritage sites in the U.S.
The scope of work included:
Site Preparation: Clearing and grubbing operations, performed exclusively from the riverside using a barge-mounted excavator, to protect the sensitive archaeological landscape.
Environmental Controls: Implementation of comprehensive erosion, sediment, and pollution control measures throughout construction.
Riprap Installation: Placement of approximately 19,000 tons of Class II riprap to stabilize the riverbank and mitigate ongoing erosion.
To preserve the integrity of this nationally recognized archaeological site, all construction materials were transported by barge and placed from the river. Land-based access was restricted to skid steer-sized equipment or smaller, minimizing ground disturbance in culturally sensitive zones. Throughout the project, protection of historical, archaeological, and cultural resources was prioritized and maintained with the highest standards of care.
