Port Allen Lock Relief Well Replacement – Port Allen, LA

This project scope included installing one new relief well, abandoning one existing relief well, and testing of four (4) existing relief wells.

Work required drilling, sampling, construction, developing and testing of the new well, abandoning one relief well, running pump tests on four (4) existing relief wells, installation of well outlets and restoration of the site upon completion.

The new relief well was drilled to elevation -157 NGVD. Before drilling, all tools were washed with a chlorine solution to prevent any bacteria from entering the well.   Sampling was performed on the drilling fluid at a minimum of 2.5 feet or if there were changes in strata.  The new well was developed upon completion by removing all fines from the well and the filter pack.  Final pump tests were ran on the new well and the four (4) existing relief wells.

One well was abandoned by filling the well with a cement-bentonite slurry grout to the bottom of the hole.  Prior to filling the holes, the solid pipe and screen were salvaged.

Environmental impacts were considered with the use of portable mud pits, treated water for drilling and jetting and frequent sampling.

The site was restored to its original condition and all construction debris was also removed from the site.
